I love to add mantras or encouragements to my phone wallpaper. I see that screen often throughout the day and use it to refocus myself on my goals. In the past, I've used it to remind myself to get off the phone, or that I can conquer my challenges, or simply to remind myself to be more present in my real life.
Right now, my phone wallpaper says Embrace Imperfection. While it has always been my anthem that real is better than perfect and that our lives should be lived and also SHARED authentically, it recently hit me how much my fear of imperfection has kept me from diving in and starting projects or learning a new skill. In fact, I was such a perfectionist, that I feared even calling myself one... because then I might not be perfect enough to be a perfectionist. You can see how absolutely ridiculous that sounds!
Six months ago, I purchased supplies to learn to paint with watercolors. I rushed to Michaels, all pumped up to try a 7 Day Watercolor Challenge. I didn’t even complete the first day. Then, I watched another online watercolor course. Finally, I bought a watercolor book. And STILL, I hadn't picked up a brush.
I let fear of not being good at painting keep me from learning to paint. No one is good at painting the first time they put their brush to paper. I wasn’t good at photography the first time I set my camera on manual mode. But, today I am so happy to have started that journey and am thrilled with the growth I have seen.
I want to be an example for my children that we should never stop challenging ourselves and learning and growing. And I would have failed them as a mother if they grew up thinking that imperfection was a weakness. I want them to embrace imperfection and that we CAN do things that are hard for us!
So, I will not let my fear of imperfection keep me from starting. I will not forget to enjoy the process of learning a new skill. Today, I will embrace imperfection. I hope you’ll join me.
What is your mantra? In what ways do you remind yourself and encourage yourself?
